  • The Library Board previewed early plans for a new Lacombe branch that will replace the 1,500 sqft building with a 6,000 sqft facility featuring study rooms and outdoor space linked to the Tammany Trace. Community input from last July helped shape the design, which will be refined as planning continues.  NOLA.com

  • Custom suit shops are booming in Louisiana as new technology lets businesses quickly offer personalized, made-to-measure garments — from Magazine Street showrooms to home-based tailors.   • Bywater Bakery explained that their king cake, made with cream cheese and butter, is best enjoyed fresh because shipping ruins its texture *icing slides and sugar melts*. The bakery started as a king cake shop and now serves breakfast, lunch and a range of sweet to savory treats.  NOLA.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Emeril’s reimagined tasting menu restaurant earned two Michelin stars after the guide’s debut review of New Orleans on Nov. 3 — making chef E.J. Lagasse the youngest to lead a two-star kitchen — and the rating has boosted reservations into January.  New Orleans City Business
  • The New Orleans Tourism and Cultural Foundation will host its Emmy-inspired Honors Gala Friday, Jan. 9 at Mardi Gras World from 7 to 11 p.m. The nonprofit plans to raise $250,000 while honoring artists and creatives, including a new in memoriam (for those lost from 2020 to 2025).  WDSU
  • Mr. Okra began selling vegetables with his father on New Orleans streets at 15 and became known for his catchy produce song and colorful truck across Uptown, Bywater, Bayou St. John, and the French Quarter.   • The New Orleans East bakery will begin walk-in sales of its popular Dong Phuong king cakes (sold out online) on Jan. 5, while online ordering reopens in February.  WWL-TV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A historic Queen Anne Colonial Revival home at 5534 St. Charles Ave. sold for $3.3M after competitive bidding attracted local + international buyers at a November auction, with the purchase closing on Dec. 23.   • New Orleans Pelicans face the Trailblazers tonight after listing key players as injured, including Derik Queen (left quad) and Saddiq Bey (right hip flexor), with Trey Murphy III questionable. Jose Alvarado returns from suspension while Herb Jones stays sidelined as the team aims to end a five-game losing streak.  Fox 8
  • Thousands of Ole Miss and Georgia fans filled downtown for the Sugar Bowl on Thursday, bringing college football’s postseason excitement back to New Orleans and a positive spirit as they reflected on last year’s tragedy.  WWL-TV
  • Ole Miss clinched a playoff spot by winning 39-34 over Georgia at the 92nd Sugar Bowl (including a game-winning 47-yard field goal by kicker Lucas Carneiro) and will face Miami in the Fiesta Bowl (set for a future game).  WDSU
  • Chris Olave, the Saints’ top receiver, will miss Sunday’s season finale against the Falcons after developing a lung blood clot. He is expected to recover within a month and join offseason training in April (ESPN).  WRNO
