  • More than 600 customers lost power in Lakeview on Jan. 10 due to a downed wire near Orleans Avenue (Filmore Avenue area). Repair crews worked on site and aimed to restore service by 6 p.m.  WDSU
  • On Saturday, Jan. 10, the Pro Bono Publico Foundation, the charitable arm of Rex Organization, awarded 77 grants totaling over $1.3 million to New Orleans schools, youth programs & Manning Family Children’s Hospital. The funds support education, health services and community programs as part of its 11th annual donation cycle.  Fox 8
  • Local business group ByMBO hosted its inaugural event, 'Spark: Light Up St. Claude,' yesterday on St. Claude near Clouet to promote safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists (the event featured illuminated jellyfish and bike giveaways) as the group works on a master plan to revitalize the busy corridor.  NOLA.com

  • South Louisiana businesses and nonprofits announced leadership changes. New appointments include Jessica Barnes as national sales manager at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center (to secure events) and Donovan Blakney as COO at Sensiva Health, with others installed at Descote, Lamar Advertising, and the Home Builders Association.  NOLA.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Advocates for early childhood education are urging lawmakers to boost funding after program cuts hit care seats. Libbie Sonnier of the Louisiana Policy Institute for Children said the push aims to secure the Early Childhood Education Fund (facing funding gaps) as the new legislative session nears.  NOLA.com
  • Louisiana officials ask a federal court to end decades-old desegregation orders in St. Mary Parish as critics say they help ensure equal education. A 5th Circuit judge in New Orleans is reviewing the case after orders were lifted in Plaquemines last year and DeSoto on Monday (oversight remains).  NOLA.com
