COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bywater Bakery partners with community in its 'Bring the Heat' drive to supply warming kits; drop-offs of blankets, jackets, hats, gloves, and scarves are accepted at the bakery before close today, and volunteers are needed Sunday (4th year event) following the loss of its delivery van in an arson incident.  WDSU

CULTURE NEWS

  • Preservation Brass Band is nominated for a Grammy for their tribute album to Kerry (Fatman) Hunter, who was hit by a car on Fat Tuesday two years ago. Community members have started crowdfunding donations to help cover the band's trip to Los Angeles for the awards.  WDSU
  • George Guesnon, a self-taught blues and jazz banjo player from Tremé, performed with Kid Clayton’s Happy Pals and toured with renowned groups, recording his first recordings in 1936 (he was nicknamed 'Creole'). His talent and legacy continue to be remembered in New Orleans music history.  Verite News
  • Today the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus will parade rain or shine as organizers monitor forecasts for heavy snow, ice, and thunderstorms that could trigger safety-based changes; if the event is delayed due to severe weather, the krewe will shift activities to its after-party at The Fillmore in New Orleans.  WWL-TV
  • Due to severe weather expected on Saturday, Algiers Mardi Gras Festival has been rescheduled; the free event returns to Federal City on Feb. 28 with a 9 a.m. parade and celebrations from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., featuring live music and expanded family programming.  WWL-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Port NOLA handled 1,067,407 cruise passengers in 2025 with over 165,000 in March and an estimated $445 million+ impact on the local economy. The port will host Carnival, Royal Caribbean and Norwegian cruises in 2026 and beyond to boost tourism.  New Orleans City Business

EDUCATION NEWS

  • KIPP East middle school band, the Mighty Marching Eagles, earned 20 trophies and prepares to perform in eight Carnival parades; band director Johnny Thomas (six-year leader) rebuilt the program during the pandemic and said the discipline has forged their award-winning sound.  WWL-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • With a hard freeze expected Sunday night into Monday morning, local experts advise residents to winterize their homes by letting faucets drip a thin stream + insulating exposed pipes to avert burst pipes and water pressure issues. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in Uptown face delays as Public Works crews install concrete barriers along St. Charles Ave from 2nd to Napoleon to keep streetcar tracks clear during a parade. Work begins Friday morning and continues through the weekend, leading to detours and restricted access.  WWL-TV
  • Gov. Jeff Landry declared a state emergency as a winter ice storm is forecast to hit Louisiana this weekend, bringing icy roads and power outages, with over 5,000 utility workers and National Guard troops on standby with generators + hot meals + bottled water.  WRNO
