COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Orleans Parish School Board approved the new cooperative agreement for the 9th Ward Stadium project near Carver High School. Full funding is in place with about $15 million raised, and construction will begin in late March to open the stadium in summer.  Fox 8
  • A winter storm caused nearly 4,000 flights to be canceled and 1,842 delayed Monday, impacting departures at Louis Armstrong International Airport and leaving travelers from cities (including New York, Dallas, Austin and Washington, D.C.) with significant delays.  WDSU
  • On Monday morning, about 1,400 7th Ward residents lost power, leaving hundreds of New Orleans neighbors in the dark; Entergy has not released a cause for the outage.  WDSU

BUSINESS NEWS

  • DoubleTree by Hilton in New Orleans completed a $5M renovation upgrading guest rooms, the lobby, rooftop pool, and meeting space (16,000 sqft). A ribbon-cutting ceremony in the International Ballroom featuring views of downtown and the river highlighted the hotel’s commitment to modern travel and local tourism.  New Orleans City Business
  • The Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses accelerator program invites local owners to apply by Jan. 31. The free 16-week program will launch on May 6 to help boost revenue growth in the area.  Biz New Orleans
  • Integrity opened a new commercial laundry and linen facility at 234 Harbor Circle to serve hotels and businesses in New Orleans and along the Gulf Coast. The site features expanded capacity + upgraded equipment that supports water-efficient, 24/7 operations and is expected to create local jobs.  Biz New Orleans

CULTURE NEWS

  • Harold “Duke” Dejan—who started the Olympia Brass Band in 1951—led a group that set the standard for traditional New Orleans brass music. He toured widely, influenced local bands like New Birth Brass Band, and performed at Preservation Hall until his death in 2002.  Verite News
  • The TEP Interpretive Center at 5909 St. Claude Ave now hosts the exhibit 'The Principal's Office' (A Walk in Our Shoes), led by Dr. Leona Tate to highlight the McDonogh Three integration milestone; future plans include adding multimedia and a civil rights timeline.  Biz New Orleans
  • The Louisiana Travel Association presented the 2026 Louey Awards on Jan. 22 in Lafayette, honoring outstanding tourism campaigns, attractions, accommodations, and events. ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Tax Foundation report shows Louisiana’s combined sales tax rate exceeds 10% (the highest in the nation). Reforms enacted over a year ago, including a state sales tax increase and income tax cut, improved its overall tax ranking to 31st.  Louisiana Radio Network

HEALTH NEWS

  • Ochsner’s ALS Center marks 10 years of care and helps people with ALS and their families with a team of 19 experts. In 2026, Ochsner will open the new Debra H. and Robert J. Patrick Neuroscience Institute — a facility bringing advanced care and research in New Orleans.  Biz New Orleans

  • The New Orleans Pelicans beat the San Antonio Spurs 104–95 at the Frost Bank Center over the weekend — Saddiq Bey and Zion Williamson each scored 24 points. The team is still last in the West and will face the Oklahoma City Thunder tomorrow night.  WRNO
