  • Tickets are on sale now for the Sippin' for Scholarships event at Central City BBQ, hosted by the Rotary Club to support student scholarships at Warren Easton and Son of a Saint. The event kicks off tomorrow at 6 p.m. with dancing, food, live auctions, and music.  WDSU
  • Volunteers from UNITY of Greater New Orleans counted homeless individuals on Tuesday, Jan. 27 in New Orleans, Jefferson Parish and Kenner. The survey, mandated by HUD (U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development), will guide local partners in addressing service gaps amid rising homelessness and budget cuts.  Fox 8

  • Hospitality entrepreneur Billy Blatty opened Mediterranean-inspired vibe dining restaurant Kira at 601 Tchoupitoulas St. in the Warehouse District last December — strong early demand led to expanded dinner service and new lunch offerings on Thursdays and Fridays.  New Orleans City Business
  • The Kern family's new interest in Galatoire's restaurant was announced Tuesday, adding the well-known owners of Kern Studios (Mardi Gras float builders) to the small ownership group in the French Quarter.  NOLA.com

  • BRG Hospitality co-founders Chef John Besh and Octavio Mantilla received the Restaurateur of the Year Louey Award at the Louisiana Travel Association meeting on Jan. 22 in New Orleans.   • Local attorney Tim Kappel and musician Cyril Vetter saw a federal appeals court uphold a key ruling on Jan. 12 that strengthens songwriters' copyright rights. The decision may reshape longstanding music agreements in the area.  Biz New Orleans

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents across south Louisiana endured a hard freeze that drove near-freezing temperatures and dangerously low wind chills—officials urged protection for people, pets and plants last night. The National Weather Service predicts chilly conditions will linger today and may challenge Saturday’s Krewe du Vieux parade.  NOLA.com

  • Office of Human Trafficking Prevention is hosting training programs during January Human Trafficking Awareness Month to help frontline workers in schools, hospitals, and law enforcement identify modern slavery in Louisiana communities.   • Louisiana expanded its Work-Based Learning Tax Credit by offering increased income tax benefits to businesses that hire students through internships+apprenticeships and related positions.   • Louisiana confirmed five additional winter storm-related deaths today, bringing the state’s total to 8—cases occurred in DeSoto, Sabine, and Franklin parishes and local officials urged residents to use warming centers and follow cold-weather safety guidance.  New Orleans City Business
