ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A home in Little Woods on Springlake Drive burned to its foundation Thursday night as firefighters arrived at 8:56 p.m. and controlled the blaze by 10:15 p.m. + 18 units and 43 personnel kept damage to nearby houses minimal.  NOLA.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The St. Augustine Marching 100, now led by Darren Rogers Jr. (former assistant director), renews its Carnival tradition with disciplined training and live performances that will captivate fans in New Orleans. The band is set to shine during Carnival season.  WWL-TV
  • Since 1970, the NOMTOC parade in Algiers has served as the West Bank’s Mardi Gras — growing from six floats to 26 floats, 625 riders and many groups. The event continues to honor its roots with community celebrations such as school supply drives and health fairs.  Verite News
  • Actor Patrick Warburton dropped by Bacchus' Den before the parade to oversee his kingdom and support local festivities. His visit reinforces his commitment to community celebrations.  WWL-TV
  • Endymion members held a mass today at Samedi Gras — part of Mardi Gras Carnival celebrations in downtown New Orleans.  Fox 8
  • The 56th annual greasing of the poles kicked off Carnival last Friday at the Royal Sonesta in the French Quarter. Local celebrities including Amanda Shaw + Ron Orleans joined in the fun, and Shaw won the contest for best pole greasing.  WDSU
  • Fox 8 will stream live parade coverage from Gallier Hall today — giving local viewers a chance to watch the festive procession as it unfolds.  Fox 8

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new report from the Perryman Group shows excessive civil litigation has cost over 45,000 jobs and added a ‘tort tax’ of $1,180 per person — straining Louisiana’s economy. Lawmakers are urged to pass reforms to ease these burdens.  New Orleans City Business

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Feb. 12, local environmental groups recycled Mardi Gras waste during Krewe Bohème after city officials withheld $200,000 in funds because of a budget deficit. Groups such as Grounds Krewe continue operational efforts with permit fee waivers, although cuts in the city's climate office have hampered coordination.  NOLA.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno announced tighter public safety for Mardi Gras — with Bourbon Street closed to vehicles from Feb. 13 until Ash Wednesday as the U.S. Homeland Security coordinates enhanced measures with the Louisiana National Guard.  WWL-TV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • During Feb. 1-7, a luxury home at 435 Betz Place in Metairie sold Feb. 3 for $1.35 million—the highest deal that week—while French Country and historic Garden District homes sold for over $1.16 million in Old Metairie and along St. Charles Avenue.  New Orleans City Business
