  • Downtown welcomed 2.2 million Carnival visitors from the Friday Cleopatra parade through Mardi Gras Day, while the riverfront hosted 7,000 on Lundi Gras with live music and local food.   • A SLU professor awaits a decision after she was removed from a Lake Maurepas pollution study for speaking to reporters about high toxin levels. A grievance panel will deliver its recommendation in 10 days as officials claim she missed key deadlines.  NOLA.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • I-12 is closed in both directions in St. Tammany Parish between Highway 59 and Highway 434 because of an active woods fire — first responders are containing the blaze and advising drivers to use alternate routes.  Fox 8

  • Bob Siemer, a 70-year-old heart disease survivor, underwent a groundbreaking stent procedure at Christ Hospital to restore blood flow after multiple open-heart surgeries, and is recovering well (hiking one week later) with his case published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.  WDSU
