COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On March 6, the Junior League of New Orleans will host its 6th annual Women’s Leadership Summit at the InterContinental New Orleans (presented by Ochsner Baptist), where women can join breakout sessions, a keynote luncheon, and networking to enhance leadership skills locally.  Biz New Orleans

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tulane University will host the annual New Orleans Book Festival from March 12–15 featuring more than 250 speakers including Stacey Abrams and Ken Burns. Attendees can enjoy literature, history, music and food sessions (registration is encouraged) on Tulane’s Uptown campus.  WWL-TV
  • New Orleans & Company and the Port of New Orleans announced that the city will host Sail 250 from May 27 to June 1, featuring ship tours, riverfront festivities and cultural programming along the Mississippi River and French Quarter (free deck tours daily 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.).  Biz New Orleans

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A statewide survey released Feb. 24 by LPIC in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Education and Agenda for Children shows rising child care costs force many parents to miss work and reduce hours, straining household budgets; families average 38 hours of care weekly.  Biz New Orleans

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials warned of financial strain as they collected only 29% of property taxes and 10% of sales taxes, leaving $27.5 million available for $65M in monthly expenses — officials expect late payments and Mardi Gras collections to boost revenue soon.  NOLA.com
  • A portion of South Claiborne Avenue is expected to become passable by Friday after a major water main break early Monday, S&WB director Randy Hayman said at the board meeting on Wednesday (highlighting the need for more funds to repair aging pipes).  WWL-TV
  • Louisiana’s Department of Children and Family Services will certify 1,100 new and reactivate 200 existing foster homes by Dec. 31, improving on a 48-for-100 ratio. The agency will streamline kinship certification and launch programs (Care Connections, Community Pathways Network) to support families and help more children avoid waiting for homes.  NOLA.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local officials have issued another boil water advisory for Fontainebleau, Broadmoor and Central City due to water contamination concerns. Residents must boil tap water until testing confirms its safety.  Fox 8

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • More than 300 residents at Central City's 12-story Guste High-Rise may be displaced after HUD found its 77% occupancy falls short of the 88% requirement (many residents are elderly or disabled). HANO will seek funds to upgrade the property, but changes may not begin for five years.  WWL-TV
  • JLL arranged a five-year, fixed-rate $61M loan to refinance Energy Centre, a 39-story office tower at 1100 Poydras St in downtown New Orleans. The building was 86.4% leased and offered 982 covered parking spaces, underscoring lender confidence in this premier asset.  New Orleans City Business
