  • WDSU's Emmy-nominated coverage of a flash flood rescue during Hurricane Francine saw a driver rescued from a submerged pickup at Canal Street Underpass at 8:45 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2024, as ex-reporter Jonah Gilmore & photojournalist Matthew Deemester captured the emergency & Good Samaritan Miles Crawford broke the truck window to save him.  WDSU
  • Goldring Woldenberg Riverfront Park opened Tuesday, April 7 at Governor Nicholls Street Wharf, replacing a former warehouse with six acres of green space, a playground and riverfront seating.   • The New Orleans Book Festival at Tulane University — a free, four-day event — set a record by drawing over 20,000 visitors from March 12-14. The event boosted local tourism with diverse book talks and cultural displays.  NOLA.com
  • Audubon Nature Institute is unveiling a new green space on Esplanade Avenue at 11 a.m. today + the ribbon-cutting marks the park's opening.  WWL-TV
  • Before sugar took over, indigo was the cash crop on Louisiana plantations; it thrived thanks to the expertise of enslaved Africans and high-quality seeds from Haiti (the deep-blue dye earned high prices in Europe and set the stage for a later sugar boom).  Verite News
  • Clarence Johnson the third will celebrate his birthday this Friday by giving a live concert in New Orleans (viewers can stream the event on WWL TV).  WWL-TV
  • TikTok star Keith Lee is hosting his inaugural FamiLee Day festival at UNO Lakefront Arena grounds on May 15 where musical acts such as Kirk Franklin, Tobe Nwigwe, DJ Mannie Fresh, and Andra Day will perform along with carnival rides and a family obstacle course while food vendors pay no fees (supporting local business growth).  WWL-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • New Orleans’ Data Center reported that job growth in the state’s oil and gas industry increased less than 1% since 2015 while over 30,000 drilling jobs and 5,000 water transport roles were lost after the 2014 oil price drop & seasonal construction booms have since taken prominence.  Louisiana Radio Network

  • US Army Staff Sgt. Matthew Blank is fighting to reverse his wife Annie Ramos’ detention at Fort Polk after she was taken into federal immigration custody last Thursday. The case shows how tightened federal rules affect military families in Louisiana.  NOLA.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • New Orleans health & environment officials are seeking $5 million from Congress to test for lead and clean up playgrounds after tests found unsafe levels in over half of 80 local parks. A new task force will work with community groups to guide testing and remediation as funds become available.  Verite News
  • Plaquemines Parish remains under a boil water advisory. Residents are urged to boil water before use — officials monitor the situation and will update guidance as soon as it is safe.  WWL-TV
