- ➤ A suspect, Le Chau, pulled a female deputy’s hair and violently resisted her at the Manhattan and Lapalco Blvd intersection on Thursday evening—he was taken to the hospital and later booked on multiple charges at Jefferson Parish Correctional Center. WWL-TV
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Lawmakers are under pressure today to find an extra $198 million for teacher pay since teachers got $2,000 and support staff $1,000 for two years. They may cut $50 million from Gov. Landry’s LA GATOR program—which has received 33,000 applications—to help fund the stipends, a change that could reduce tuition slots for up to 11,000 students including many from low-income families. - ➤ The New Orleans City Council voted on Thursday to send $10 million to public schools and to end fees for collecting taxes for local agencies, fulfilling part of a legal settlement that aims to address a $50 million budget gap. - ➤ At a news conference in Ascension Parish, Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple said he had not met with Governor Landry about auto insurance reform since May 7th and noted he was not invited to other meetings, while Landry criticized Temple for failing to act on high insurance costs for Louisianans.
