COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Volunteers are cleaning up trash at Lincoln Beach—part of its redevelopment under Love the Boot Week in New Orleans. The cleanup helps improve the area for local residents.  WWL-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Police said a New Orleans woman was shot in the left leg on April 12 when a stranger tried to force entry into her home on Erato Street at about 12:30 a.m.—residents had barricaded the door and the suspect fled after firing, and she is now receiving hospital treatment.  Fox 8

CULTURE NEWS

  • Yesterday, Peaches Records celebrated its 50th anniversary at its Magazine St. shop with Record Store Day festivities that featured exclusive vinyl drops from artists including The Meters, Taylor Swift, Mahalia Jackson, Gorillaz and Elton John — free beer, pizza and snowballs from local vendors along with a birthday party for Da Project Barbie from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. DJs from Flava 1 Radio and Southern Dynasty played music all day as the event honored New Orleans’ rich music legacy.  WDSU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ochsner Health and STEM NOLA hosted a free hands-on event on April 12 that let kids learn about the heart and how blood flows. The event gave young people science demos at STEM NOLA (1234 Science Ave.)  WDSU
  • The Orleans Parish School Board will hold a live auction on April 30 to sell seven unused school buildings and lots to help close a $50 million budget gap. The auction will offer a historic art deco school on Carondelet that appraised at $6.5 million and a red-brick building on Nashville — with a minimum bid of $3.17 million.  NOLA.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A new $2 million pilot program to monitor juvenile offenders in real time will launch in the coming days to replace the old 30-day delay that sometimes led to tragedy—Council member Helena Moreno said the project, developed with help from the state's Office of Juvenile Justice, Orleans Parish Juvenile Court judges and Mayor LaToya Cantrell, will add dedicated probation officers and supervisors to oversee up to 200 youths with ankle monitors. Currently, 25 youths are monitored and the program plans to expand its capacity over the coming year.  NOLA.com
  • The Department of Defense and its partners held a Family Member Update on April 12 at 9 a.m. CST at the New Orleans Marriott — 555 Canal St. — to inform Louisiana families about efforts to locate missing service members from past conflicts — Vietnam, Korea, the Cold War and World War II.  WDSU
  • On Friday, longtime DEQ ethics liaison Roger Ward sent a seven-page letter accusing Secretary Aurelia S. Giacometto of destroying the agency's workplace culture with erratic management—leading many employees to leave. Giacometto defended her record and said she is building new internal systems—aimed at modernizing operations.  NOLA.com
  • Louisiana teachers will lose their $2,000 stipends after this school year unless Gov. Jeff Landry and lawmakers find nearly $200 million in funding to keep pay steady. Lawmakers are considering cutting or shifting funds—such as reallocating money from key education programs—to cover the shortfall.  WBOK
