  • Two years ago, city officials opened a $1.4 million clubhouse and playground at Village de L’Est in New Orleans East—gunshots shattered its windows a month later, leaving graffiti and broken fencing visible today. Many residents and community groups claim underfunding has caused widespread disrepair in parks, and city Council members have directed officials to assess repair needs and improve safety.  NOLA.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A motorcyclist died when he hit a concrete barrier on the Almonaster Avenue Overpass near Jourdan Road at about 10:20 p.m. Saturday — police say the crash in New Orleans East is under investigation.  WWL-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Former LSU wide receiver Kyren Lacy — charged with a deadly crash in Lafourche Parish that killed a 78-year-old man and released on bond in January — was found dead in Houston on Saturday night.  WDSU
  • A man was shot in the arm at the intersection of Canal and North Rampart on April 13 at 4:24 a.m. — he was taken to a hospital and the New Orleans Police Department is investigating the incident.  WDSU
  • Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival was shut down early when deputies confirmed two people were shot — Sheriff Gerald Sticker was on scene.  WWL-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana lawmakers are introducing new bills during the session that begins today to help lower rising insurance costs by encouraging fortified roofs for coastal homes. The proposals include a $10,000 grant and improved tax breaks (steps aimed at attracting more insurers to storm-prone areas).  NOLA.com
