- ➤ Nathan Haydel, a great-grandson of Dooky and Leah Chase, grew up in the famed second floor of Dooky Chase Restaurant where civil rights leaders once gathered and now stars as an understudy for Alexander Hamilton on Broadway's North American tour. - ➤ Louisiana AG Liz Murrill filed legal papers Friday, April 11 claiming the Orleans Parish jail policy that limits deputies from enforcing federal immigration detainers violates a new state law. - ➤ City leaders from Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s administration are set to present a plan today to sell bonds in 2025 and 2027 to pay roughly $88 million in unpaid court judgments owed to plaintiffs—avoiding a draw on the general fund. Council Budget Chair Joe Giarrusso said the council is expected to approve the plan within the year while plaintiff lawyer Joseph McMahon welcomed the overdue measure. Fox 8
- ➤ New Orleans officials are allowed to sexually harass workers if their actions do not hurt work, the Civil Service Commission ruled as it reinstated former Clerk of Council Lora Johnson—who had harassed employees for 11 years. - ➤ A new watchdog report said Judge Darryl Derbigny cost taxpayers millions by delaying felony case progress, with his courtroom averaging 412 open cases and a median resolution time of 294 days compared to lower averages among his colleagues. Jeff Landry argued before the House Insurance Committee on Wednesday and his bill, HB576, passed early—giving him an edge in his battle to let his commissioner block excessive car insurance rate hikes.
