BUSINESS NEWS

  • Try-Me Coffee celebrated 100 years of hand-roasted blends—marking a century of local craft—with a new Century Sampler box that includes four 3-oz coffee bags, a commemorative tote and history card. The Bywater roaster now offers free local delivery in New Orleans and nearby suburbs and is run by fourth-generation co-owners Lauren Mermaid McCabe and Abby King.  WWL-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A suspect accused of murdering his parents in Amite was booked into Tangipahoa Parish jail after being arrested in California on April 4 — Joshua Brocato, 34 — and faces charges for two counts of first-degree murder, marijuana offenses and multiple firearms violations.  WDSU
  • Fraternity members Caleb McCray, Kyle Thurman, and Isaiah Smith were expelled from Omega Psi Phi—following the hazing death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson—and now face charges including manslaughter and felony hazing. Wilson's family has installed billboards honoring him with an anti-hazing message that will run until today.  WWL-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Southern Regional Climate Center, which serves Louisiana and other nearby states, shut down on Thursday as its federal funding expired — meteorologists and state officials say the loss of near real-time climate data may affect weather forecasting and drought monitoring. State climatologist Jay Grymes warned that missing data could disrupt planning for everything from construction projects to emergency preparedness.  WBOK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders announced on April 17th that New Orleans will begin a three-month amnesty on June 1 so drivers can pay parking and traffic camera tickets without late fees—payments can be made in full or through a plan to help boost the city's emergency savings fund. The program is expected to generate $18 million while the city considers working with the Louisiana Office of Debt Recovery, though no deal has been reached.  Fox 8
  • On March 20, a worker died in a forklift accident at a chemical plant outside Baton Rouge and government officials announced plans to close OSHA’s only local office—raising concerns that fewer inspections in Cancer Alley may put workers at greater risk.  New Orleans City Business
