  • One Happy Mama hosted its second annual Rooted in Love baby shower and block party for Black maternal health at Martin Behrman Charter School on Saturday, April 19 from noon to 4 p.m.—the event offered free giveaways like car seats, strollers, diapers and wipes along with a kids’ zone featuring a bounce house, an Easter egg hunt and mini photo shoots. Fireside chats on young motherhood and maternal mental health provided local families with important insights on safe, respectful care.  WDSU

CRIME NEWS

  • Two men were arrested on April 8 in New Orleans during a joint drug bust—federal and local officers seized fentanyl, heroin, stolen guns, cash and a stolen vehicle, and both now face more than a dozen charges.  WWL-TV
  • New Orleans police say a man working on his car in New Orleans East was shot in the leg just before 1:45 p.m. near the intersection of Chef Menteur Highway and Dale Street — shots were fired from a black GMC that then drove away and EMS took him to the hospital where he is stable.  WDSU

  • Tulane University professor Marcello Canuto is using lidar technology at the Middle American Research Institute to reveal lost Maya cities—this new method scans thick jungle cover. Research using the technique uncovered a site called Valeriana with plazas, causeways and ball courts—an effort that may change how archaeologists study ancient civilizations.  NOLA.com
  • Urban South Brewery celebrated its 9th anniversary last Saturday, April 19, with a free, family-friendly party at its taproom on Tchoupitoulas St where live music, local food, and new beer collaborations — including limited-edition 'Street Chicken', a THC-infused root beer from Gretna’s Chicken’s Kitchen— marked a special day for the celebrated brewery.  WWL-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today marks the 15th anniversary of the Deepwater Horizon spill that hurt Louisiana marshes, and scientists at the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium in Cocodrie are running giant plant pot experiments with cordgrass — the tests show how oil speeds erosion and help guide future spill responses.  NOLA.com

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Louisiana Department of Health reported Saturday that an unvaccinated adult from Region 1—comprising Orleans, Jefferson and St. Bernard parishes—contracted measles through international travel, is in isolation and has received hospital treatment. The department noted that last year the area had three travel-related cases and urged vaccination to help prevent further spread.  NOLA.com
  • Today, New Orleans marked 10 years since its smoke-free ordinance banned smoking in bars, casinos, and indoor public spaces. Health officials say that 75 percent of residents report cleaner air and 77 percent support expanding the ban around building entrances—public health advocates plan to push for more tobacco-free initiatives.  WWL-TV
