  • STARC opened a new Community Wins Respite Center on April 13 in Slidell to offer weekend respite services for families caring for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, funded by In-Telecom’s golf tournaments + local support.  NOLA.com
  • Mimi Padgett — a Master Gardener in Covington — will welcome guests and direct parking at the Northshore Garden and Plant show on April 24 and 25 at the St. Tammany Parish Fairgrounds from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event features 60 booths with vendors, demos, and a children's area.  NOLA.com
  • Amtrak’s Mardi Gras Service Line reached its 100,000th rider Tuesday morning at Union Passenger Terminal—marking a milestone for the scenic Gulf South route that restored a historic rail connection and boosted local tourism.  WWL-TV
  • On Saturday, April 11, unCommon Construction and Airbnb hosted a community build day in New Orleans where 35 apprentices and 18 volunteers from Airbnb and Tulane University worked on projects (a two-story home and deck addition).   • Chef Emeril Lagasse plans to open two new restaurants downtown as part of the Fairmont Hotel redevelopment — Delmonico Steakhouse will serve prime and dry-aged beef with wines while The Café will offer a casual spot for breakfast and lunch. The project is a block from The Roosevelt.  WWL-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local musicians are staying busy during festival season as Jazz Fest, featuring 637 performers (85% local), will begin soon after French Quarter Fest ended. Artists like Fermín Ceballos and Ovi Giron continue booking multiple city shows to grow their fan base.  Fox 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Sewerage and Water Board announced that a part has been ordered to repair the sewer main break in the Industrial Canal and repairs will begin Friday after 12+ million gallons of sewage spilled into the water. Samples are being taken near the High Rise and at the lock as regulators join the investigation.  WDSU

  • A new urgent care facility called The Complete Care Urgent Center, founded by Dr. Calvin Williams and Dr. Cheryl Williams, opened Saturday, April 18 at 8030 Crowder Blvd., offering fast, walk-in care for non-emergency health needs in New Orleans East.  Biz New Orleans
