  • French Quarter bars and restaurants on the 400 and 500 blocks of Bienville will close at 6 p.m. on Cinco de Mayo to reduce violence risks, Pike Howard of Felipe’s Taqueria said after recent shootings raised safety concerns—police are in talks with business owners about further security measures.  WWL-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A Kenner man, Henry Torres, 25, was arrested after he allegedly entered an unlocked car and stole a black Louis Vuitton bag with bank cards and cash on April 25 around 6 a.m.—police tracked him to a Delaware Avenue residence where a search found additional items before his arrest.  WDSU
  • Former Orleans 911 director Tyrell Morris faces charges including false impersonation of a peace officer, malfeasance in office, injuring public records and insurance fraud as his final pretrial conference is set for today — his trial will begin tomorrow in a case active since June 2024 with several defense motions denied and following his recent announcement to run for mayor.  WDSU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Coast Guard is responding to an oil and gas mixture seen in Garden Island Bay in a Plaquemines Parish marsh. The agency said it will check the area (to protect local resources) and monitor the situation for any changes.  WWL-TV
  • An oil spill near the Garden Island Bay Production Facility in Plaquemines Parish is under investigation as multiple agencies including NOAA and the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality coordinate cleanup efforts (Spectrum OpCo, LLC is identified as responsible). There have been no reports of injuries or wildlife impacts while crews work to contain the oil and gas mixture.  WWL-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Water Collaborative has proposed a plan to revamp New Orleans’ drainage system after recent heavy rains led to flooding in the Lower 9th Ward and other areas. The nonprofit, which has offered its recommendations to city leaders for five years, aims to create the Walter Justice Fund—an initiative to raise $50 million annually to improve stormwater infrastructure.  WDSU
