CRIME NEWS
- ➤ An ISIS suspect linked to the New Year's Day Bourbon Street terror attack that killed 14 was arrested in Iraq and will be prosecuted under the country's Anti-Terrorism Law—Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry praised the arrest as the FBI continues investigating potential accomplices. WRNO
- ➤ The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office identified Patrick Prosper, 24, who was found dead near a golf course in Pontchartrain Park on Monday from a gunshot wound—his death has been ruled a homicide with NOPD, the New Orleans crime lab, and the Fire Department investigating while a city tow truck removed a white Lexus from a nearby pond. - ➤ Abuse survivors' attorneys filed a motion on the eve of the bankruptcy's five-year anniversary asking Judge Meredith Grabill to dismiss the Archdiocese of New Orleans case for mismanagement and high legal fees (they claim these issues have stalled settlement efforts) and the judge ordered the archdiocese to show cause with a status conference scheduled for this afternoon. - ➤ Paul Batiste, a New Orleans musician and educator, died Friday morning from lung cancer at age 75. His only son Travis said his father taught local musicians—an influence that will be honored at a memorial set for Tuesday, May 6. WWL-TV
- ➤ A new exhibit called Pioneers of Women’s Carnival opens May 9 at the Presbytère on Jackson Square to honor women who shaped Mardi Gras with costumes, photos and artifacts, including trailblazer Aminthe Laudumiey Nungesser who founded the Krewe of Iris in 1917 and the Krewe of Venus in 1940. - ➤ Ochsner Health broke ground on a $300M children’s hospital in New Orleans on April 29, marking its largest project that expands pediatric care. The five-story facility will include a Level IV Surgical NICU and an expanded emergency department, create about 400 permanent jobs and 200 construction jobs — with a Make-A-Wish partnership funding wishes — and open in early 2028.
