- ➤ A New Orleans police officer was injured on Friday morning at the Walmart in the Lower Garden District when a man, who had overdosed and then acted erratically after receiving Narcan, hit a bystander with a parked truck as the officer intervened—officials said the officer was stable and traffic backed up along Tchoupitoulas Street. - ➤ A genetic test by SeaD Consulting showed 18 of 19 shrimp dishes at Jazz Fest were made with real Gulf shrimp—evidence that vendors voluntarily support local shrimpers despite no legal requirement—and this result sharply contrasts with seafood mislabeling found elsewhere. - ➤ The second weekend of Jazz Fest began on Thursday, May 1 with Santana headlining the Festival Stage while Morris Day and The Time, Cage the Elephant and the Yellowjackets performed on the Fair Grounds stages in Gentilly—dozens of local, national and international acts and food vendors will continue to showcase Louisiana's diverse culture through the weekend. - ➤ Woodside Energy is building a liquified natural gas terminal in Calcasieu Parish with a $17.5B investment that will produce 16.5 Mtpa and support 15,000 jobs — the largest foreign investment in Louisiana history. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ New Orleans got nearly $388 million in ARPA money starting in 2021 to help replace lost tax dollars, keep city workers paid, and fund projects like public safety and affordable housing. - ➤ Ochsner Health broke ground on The Gayle and Tom Benson Ochsner Children’s Hospital on the campus of Ochsner Medical Center with Mrs. Gayle Benson and local officials in attendance. - ➤ Louisiana is facing a surge in whooping cough that may set a record for 2025, with 164 cases reported in the first four months and two infant deaths confirmed by the Louisiana Department of Health on April 21. The department said 40 people have been hospitalized since September 2024—70 percent of whom are babies under age one—and it advises pregnant women to get a Tdap vaccine during each pregnancy.
