COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nearly 1,000 nonprofits took part in GiveNOLA Day fundraising on Tuesday, May 5, aiming to bolster local support for families; the New Orleans Women and Children’s Shelter targeted $30,000 & Second Harvest Food Bank set a goal of $100,000 to fund its summer feeding program.  WDSU
  • TikTok star Keith Lee unveiled a diverse food lineup for FamiLee Day on May 16 at UNO Lakefront Arena grounds; the festival will feature local and national vendors, live music, and family-friendly activities.  WWL-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Troopers responded at 7 a.m. on Tuesday in Duson to a chemical spill caused by a valve malfunction at a business on Lexington Drive, which led to 10 non-life-threatening injuries as patients were treated at local hospitals. Louisiana State Police are investigating the incident.  WDSU

  • Louisiana social media influencers (like Korey with a K) are boosting their incomes by partnering with local brands to post videos on food and culture that reach nearby audiences in New Orleans and Baton Rouge.   • A restored raised blue house at 212 Lafitte St in Mandeville is a featured stop at the Mother’s Day Home Tour on May 10 from 2–5 p.m. Art will be set up on the porch as visitors see historic upgrades like 500 sqft of added space and preserved blue paint.  NOLA.com
  • Whitney Plantation staff are updating its Wall of Honor as ongoing research has revealed 150 additional names (including enslaved women who worked in the fields) to better document labor from 1752 to 1865.  Verite News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A coastal study warns that rising sea levels could force managed relocation for New Orleans by late next century while some local business leaders disagree and call for better infrastructure + policy updates. Coastal scientists highlighted ancient shoreline data from the Ponchatoula Ridge to back their call for action.  WWL-TV
  • The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries warns that warm water, storms, and extended cloudy weather may cause fish kills in inland (and near-shore) waters due to low dissolved oxygen. Report any suspected fish kills so biologists can investigate and protect local fisheries.  WDSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders will vote Thursday on a new agreement to end a funding dispute between the city and the Orleans Parish School Board, which replaces property tax collection with a 1.5% fee on sales and use taxes + secures immediate and future capital funds. All terms will be finalized and entered into court.  WWL-TV
  • Grand Isle Port Commission completed repairs to the West Slip of the Commercial Dock nearly five years after Hurricane Ida damaged the area by replacing 377 feet of vinyl sheet bulkhead and upgrading walkways, pilings and parking to create six new boat slips for commercial fishing vessels.  WDSU
