COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Decades after Hurricane Katrina, a high school football team united a Katrina-ravaged Lower Plaquemines community and won a Class 1A state championship with packed Friday night games, helping rebuild a town scarred by disaster. Former coach Cyril Crutchfield said the team’s determination brought hope and renewal to the community.  Fox 8

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Gulf Coast Bank & Trust Company will open its new Elmwood Branch on May 14 at 12:30 p.m. at 1208 Elmwood Park Blvd in Harahan with a ribbon cutting at 1:30 p.m., and the sustainable facility features solar power (with backup battery storage), satellite internet, geothermal heating (and passive design) to remain operational during outages and severe weather.  Biz New Orleans

CRIME NEWS

  • Melissa Araujo, owner of Alma Cafe in New Orleans, was arrested in Baton Rouge—accused of defrauding Medicaid by receiving over $55,000 in public benefits despite earning six figures from several businesses between January 2022 and December 2024.  Fox 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The New Orleans City Council proclaimed May 8 as Cam Jordan Day to honor the former Saints defensive end for his achievements on the field and his community work—at City Hall, he received a plaque and shared heartfelt thanks with family and supporters.  Fox 8
  • A recount on Thursday confirmed that Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson won last week’s referendum by four votes, ensuring the tax that funds about 20% of the jail’s budget stays in place—officials found that two no votes were double-counted.  NOLA.com
  • The City of New Orleans released the final draft for Lincoln Beach’s master plan as it will open when phase one—estimated for late 2026 or early 2027—is complete. Advocates remain concerned about missing funding details and plan transparency while residents can submit comments online until June 2.  WWNO
  • On May 8, the New Orleans City Council passed an ordinance to stop the arrest of sex workers who report crimes against them— the law keeps officers from using condoms as evidence and now goes to Mayor LaToya Cantrell for signature. The proposal was pushed by the Trans Income Project— the rule will apply only to the New Orleans Police Department while state police continue to enforce state law.  WWNO
