COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Holy Cross and the Lower Ninth Ward are opposing a plan to revamp the Alabo Street Wharf for an industrial train project, saying it will harm public transit and local safety. Port officials claim the project will create 17 permanent jobs & boost grain transport, but neighbors say the change will lower property values & compromise community life.  WBOK

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • New Orleans police reported that on Saturday a collision on I-10 over the Industrial Canal killed one person before 12:30 a.m.—and less than two hours later a pedestrian struck on the Crescent City Connection died, with investigations underway.  WWL-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Travis Umfrey, 44, fled a traffic stop in Metairie early Saturday, May 10, and led deputies on a multi-agency chase that stretched to Interstate 55 near Ponchatoula where, after officers deployed a spike strip and fired a shot while he resisted arrest and tried to grab a knife—he was eventually wrestled to the ground and booked on multiple charges.  Fox 8

  • Pope Leo XIV—the first American pope with 7th Ward Creole roots—has excited local Black Catholics who trace his lineage to families in New Orleans over a century ago. Historians and parishioners say his deep Afro-Creole heritage strengthens the city’s cultural legacy during challenging times.  NOLA.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Royce Duplessis has sponsored Senate Bill 218 to let inmates convicted by nonunanimous juries petition to reset their cases to pretrial status—supporters say it will help fix a Jim Crow–era legacy while district attorneys warn it may overload the system and affect up to 1,600 prisoners. The measure, which has gained bipartisan backing, now awaits further action in the Legislature.  WBOK
