  • On May 16, a new tiny home duplex was unveiled in the Lower 9th Ward by a collaboration of Travelers Aid Society, Louvis Services, and Tulane University School of Architecture to provide supportive housing for those experiencing homelessness. CRIME NEWS

  • Sterling Williams—a jail worker at Orleans Justice Center—admitted he turned off the water to cover a gap behind a toilet that let 10 inmates escape after an inmate threatened him, and six remain at large as officials investigate security failures.  New Orleans City Business
  • A family in Algiers mourned 9-year-old Leelani Brooks after she was fatally shot as her mother recalled the child's courage and joy—promising to keep her memory alive.  WWL-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • At the State of the Coast conference in New Orleans, experts presented new research by Tulane University and partners showing that less than 10% of the Mississippi River Delta’s sediment reaches the Gulf, a trend that threatens coastal protection, local jobs, and drinking water safety. The research team will build predictive models until 2100 and trial solutions to address coastal degradation—steps that could guide future policy and community planning.  Biz New Orleans

  • Jay Batt, a longtime New Orleans business and civic leader who served on the City Council and led post-Katrina recovery in District A, died in his sleep at 64 on May 18th.
