  • Shell’s Mars platform in the Gulf reached one billion barrels over 30 years, marking the first offshore asset in the nation to hit this milestone. Located 130 miles south of New Orleans, the platform supports 6,000+ workers as Shell builds a new deepwater headquarters in the River District.  Biz New Orleans
  • Startup Noir NOLA (partnering with Startup NOLA and community organizations) is expanding capital access for Black founders by hosting an IDEAfuel Founder Salon on May 27 and a Lender Connect event on June 16 at Mr. Wolf Espresso and NOLA Brewing and Pizza Co. CULTURE NEWS

  • Do Portugal Circus, a fifth-generation family-run show blending classic acts with modern thrills, is performing at the Shrine on Airline in Metairie through Sunday before moving to New Orleans East on May 28 (tickets are $20 for children and $30 for adults).  WWL-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Bernard Parish’s longtime superintendent Doris Voitier announced her retirement next month after 55 years guiding the school system through Hurricane Katrina recovery (her efforts earned her a John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award). A successor has yet to be named.  WDSU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After months of rehab, nine sea turtles will be released into the Gulf today by the Audubon Aquarium Rescue team + the careful recovery process helped prepare the turtles for return.  WWL-TV
  • NOAA and weather experts predict that a strong El Niño will lower Atlantic storm activity this season. NOAA forecasts 8 to 14 named storms, with 3 to 6 hurricanes possible, and New Orleans residents are advised to prepare as the season begins June 1.  WWL-TV

  • LSU announced today that former national championship-winning coach Ed Orgeron will join the football staff as a special assistant for recruiting + defense. He previously worked with Lane Kiffin and led the team to a 2019 title.  WRNO
