  • On Memorial Day, May 25, dozens gathered at the National World War II Museum to honor America's fallen soldiers; women in period attire sang the Star-Spangled Banner while veteran Ira Milan (103) recalled his service and Terry Savage paid tribute to her late son.  Fox 8

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Olive Branch Cafe in Algiers reopened for carryout Saturday after a car plowed into its dining room, injuring several people (all treated and released) while owner Russell Autry said safety measures like bollards are being added until the dining area fully reopens in coming weeks.  WWL-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Essence Fest is seeking up to $12 million in funding from city and state officials to secure a long-term deal that would support the festival’s programming and ensure future celebrations — officials will review the request soon.  WWL-TV
  • New Orleans duo Shirley & Lee made a big mark on R&B with their hit 'Let the Good Times Roll' in 1957, even though their voices did not match perfectly. They began singing as kids in the 1950s and their back & forth style still affects local music today.  Verite News
  • Sail 250 is scheduled to kick off in New Orleans in just 2 days — a maritime display celebrating tall ships and naval vessels to honor America's 250th anniversary. The community event invites locals to appreciate the city's rich maritime heritage.  WWL-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA reported that gas prices in St. Bernard Parish averaged $3.935 per gallon for regular unleaded on Memorial Day — making them among the cheapest in Louisiana — while the state average reached $4.005. The report also noted slightly higher rates in nearby Orleans and Jefferson Parishes.  Fox 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Alice Birney Elementary in Metairie, Jefferson Parish’s dual-language program (certified for immersion standards by Louisiana) showed strong results on Tuesday, May 19 as students engaged in Spanish learning games; the program now enrolls 2,000 students and is set to expand as demand increases.  NOLA.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Flood Watch remains in effect from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. today for the New Orleans metro + south Mississippi as heavy rain may cause street flooding, so residents should avoid flooded roads.  WDSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City leaders will launch the new 'Bryan's Call' alert system today to help locate vulnerable people who go missing (this initiative aims to improve community safety).  WWL-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The New Orleans Saints will play in their first international NFL game on Oct. 25 at Stade de France when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers in Paris. The NFL will reveal the full 17-game schedule on Thursday—featuring a record nine games played across four continents.  WDSU
