BUSINESS NEWS

  • Restaurants in New Orleans are seeing slower business this summer as school breaks, vacations, and hot weather bring fewer customers. Manager Will Simmons at Francolini's said his team is staffing less — lower sales forced the change while tourism officials expect upcoming events like Essence Fest and the U.S. Gymnastics Championships to boost visits.  WWL-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • On June 1, runners took part in the Run/Walk Through History race at Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery to help preserve New Orleans' historic tombs. Local runner Owen Skelton won the five-kilometer course in just over 16 minutes—money raised will support work by the Preservation Resource Center.  Fox 8
  • A jazz funeral was held Saturday in New Orleans to honor 19 Black residents whose skulls were used in a racist study after a doctor sent them to Leipzig more than 150 years ago. Dillard University and local groups returned the remains and held a memorial at Lawless Memorial Chapel—performances included by Black Men of Labor and Kumbuka African Dance and Drum Collective at the Hurricane Katrina Memorial.  WWL-TV

  • A powerful burst of solar material on Saturday evening caused a strong storm that brought the chance for bright Northern Lights to appear in Louisiana last night and early this morning. Meteorologists said the storm may have affected power grids and advised residents to seek dark northern skies for a clear view — a rare event in our area.  WBOK
  • FOX 8 airs Weathering the Storm 2025 today at 6:30 p.m. to explain how forecasting technology advancements—developed over 20 years—improve warning accuracy and lower hurricane preparation costs for New Orleans residents.  Fox 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today at 6 p.m. CDT, a virtual town hall hosted by Alliance for Affordable Energy will let Louisiana residents discuss the power outage that left over 100,000 people without power on May 25; a special hearing is set for tomorrow at 10 a.m. at New Orleans City Council Chambers—organizers aim to hold Entergy, Cleco and MISO accountable for preventing future failures.  WDSU
  • Retired Lt. Gen. Russell Honore told local residents at First Grace United Methodist Church that they needed to prepare for hurricanes as the season began because federal help may be delayed—he advised keeping a seven-day supply of water and a 30-day stock of medicine for emergency evacuations.  Fox 8

  • Dave Stroud, a stroke survivor who suffered three strokes and recovered at Methodist Hospital, now builds therapy devices that help improve fine motor skills for others.
