- ➤ Senate Finance Committee restored $30 million in high-dose tutoring funding for K-12 students and approved $199 million for teacher stipends in the proposed budget for next fiscal year, aiming to boost tutoring programs while protecting teacher pay. The committee also cut LA Gator voucher funding to $43 million, noting most students already attend private or parochial schools—while adding amendments for UNO transfer and sheriff funding before the session ends on June 12th. - ➤ A giant cloud of Sahara dust is covering most of the Caribbean and will hit Louisiana and nearby states later this week, possibly causing eye irritation and breathing problems. - ➤ The Sewerage and Water Board issued a boil water advisory today for part of New Orleans East after a valve failure at Chatelain Drive caused water pressure to drop below 20 pounds per square inch for about five minutes. - ➤ State records show that for months Atalco’s Gramercy refinery allowed toxic red mud containing arsenic, cadmium, and other heavy metals to spill from breached levees into public lands and a drainage area that leads to Lake Maurepas—raising serious environmental and public health concerns. Officials from state and federal agencies are now investigating the facility's repeated failures to inspect and repair its waste containment systems. New Orleans City Business

- ➤ The Louisiana Senate Finance Committee cut $50M in the LA GATOR voucher program, leaving state funds for 6,000 students while reallocating $30M to a tutoring program — nearly 40,000 families had applied for vouchers. The Senate’s budget proposal also includes a potential $500M boost in federal Medicaid funds — along with measures for UNO debt relief, increased sheriff pay per inmate, and support for the Louisiana DOGE initiative. - ➤ With ten days left before the legislative session ends on June 12, the Louisiana Legislature must approve a budget and a bill to reorganize the Department of Transportation to improve spending on roads and bridges in rural areas. - ➤ On May 22, the Army Corps finished testing Pump 1 at London Avenue canal after it repaired corroded flood pumps that help keep New Orleans dry—part of the city's flood protection system built after Katrina.
