CRIME NEWS
- ➤ New Orleans police say an argument on St. Claude Avenue near Elysian Fields turned violent just before midnight Saturday when a man used a hammer to break a food truck window, prompting a gunman to fire twice at the victim who drove himself to the hospital and is now stable while the suspect remains at large. - ➤ The New Orleans Police Department is investigating a shooting on St. Claude Avenue in the Marigny neighborhood after a man with a gunshot wound was taken to a nearby hospital—police are still looking into the incident. WDSU
- ➤ 22-year-old Joshua Stevens was arrested after a 12:19 a.m. crash on the 7900 block of Almonaster Ave—he was charged with two counts of vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular negligent injury—and his bond was set at $150,000 as his car hit a stationary motorcycle, killing a man and a woman and injuring two others. - ➤ Bishop Harold Perry, born in Lake Charles, made history as New Orleans’ first Black bishop when Pope Paul VI named him auxiliary bishop in 1965+He later became a respected church leader in Louisiana, Arkansas and Mississippi, and a middle school on Dauphine Street was named in his honor in 1994. - ➤ City officials say they reached an agreement with the public school system to split revenue from school zone speed cameras but NOLA Public Schools says no final contract has been signed yet — raising questions about compliance with state law. State Sen. Stewart Cathey said money should be returned to drivers and introduced a bill to allow charges if officials do not follow the law. WDSU
- ➤ More than 5,000 residents from Harahan, River Ridge, South Kenner, Metairie, Waggaman, Avondale & Bridge City will receive payouts ranging from hundreds to thousands of dollars by the end of the summer as part of a $4.5M settlement after officials admitted that the Waggaman landfill emitted noxious odors causing health issues. A new lawsuit against former landfill contractors has been filed and each resident will need to prove their case in court. NOLA.com
