CRIME NEWS

  • Thomas Welty, a 46-year-old New Orleans man, was sentenced to 30 years in prison after being convicted of grooming, drugging and sexually abusing two 15-year-old girls in Metairie — prosecutors said his crimes included raping one victim and allowing his friends to assault her.  NOLA.com
  • A Reserve teenager—17-year-old Tylik Jackson, a recent East St. John High School graduate—was fatally shot after a fistfight on Thursday night near the 400 block of Northwest Third Street, and detectives are investigating the incident.  NOLA.com
  • Nearly 30 days after the Orleans Parish jail breakout, police say that two inmates, Derrick Groves and Antoine Massey, remain at large while a $50,000 reward is offered for information, and Groves' girlfriend, Darriana Burton, a former sheriff's employee, was arrested on a felony count of conspiracy to commit simple escape as Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick urged their surrender and Council President JP Morrell criticized Sheriff Susan Hutson for mishandling jail key security.  NOLA.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Civil rights icon Leona Tate attended a reception on Thursday at the Historic New Orleans Collection in the French Quarter where a new exhibit, The Trail They Blazed, opened to share her personal story and local civil rights voices. The exhibit features oral histories and original artifacts that document key moments such as school desegregation and voter registration protests — it will remain on view until June 2026.  Verite News

  • In 2024, New Orleans welcomed 19.08 million visitors and recorded $10.4 billion in spending, marking the first time since the COVID pandemic that the city passed the 19-million mark while nearly matching 2019’s numbers.  Biz New Orleans

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Louisiana's state Department of Education has released a 31-page guide called The Power of Presence to reduce chronic absenteeism by using community-based strategies — education leaders say the framework aims to cut absenteeism by 2% every year, which could mean 45,000 fewer chronically absent students by the 2027-28 school year.  NOLA.com

  • Voters in Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, St. Charles, and St. John the Baptist parishes will choose a board member for the Crescent Soil and Water Conservation District—the first contested election in its history—with polls open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. today using paper ballots at designated sites.  WWNO
  • New Orleans homeland security director Collin Arnold said that proposed changes to FEMA will leave the city without needed federal support for bringing people to safety and for recovering after storms—he warned that local resources alone are not enough when hurricanes worsen. He urged the White House to establish a clear replacement plan before phasing out FEMA—otherwise, New Orleans will face a tough lurch.  WWL-TV
  • Louisiana AG Liz Murrill is probing CVS for using customer data to send texts opposing a bill that would ban joint ownership of drugstores and pharmacy benefit managers — she said a cease-and-desist letter will be issued while Gov. Jeff Landry considers a special session for similar legislation. The texts sent to customers mixed health information with political messaging, prompting concerns from lawmakers about misuse of private data.  New Orleans City Business
  • Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill sent a cease-and-desist letter to CVS over text messages about House Bill 358—messages that warned over 100 CVS locations could close, raise medication costs, and risk jobs.
