Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 24th of June.
Good morning, New Orleans.
Tulane University signed an agreement to lead the redevelopment of the former Charity Hospital on Tulane Avenue.
The plan converts two-thirds of the 90-year-old building into a public health and research hub and the remainder into apartments, with construction starting before year end and move in fall 2029.
Tulane coastal geologist Torbjörn Törnqvist defended his May Nature Sustainability study that urges New Orleans to plan a gradual coastal retreat while seizing opportunities in restoration (focusing on water management and sustainable housing).
Local officials and business leaders have disputed the study, but Törnqvist maintains that the region can lead in adapting to rising seas.
Last week, Tropical Storm Arthur produced 14 tornadoes across New Orleans and nearby parishes, including an (EF1) tornado near Carrollton Bend on June 18 that injured two in Avondale and damaged homes; officials say improved satellite imagery now detects tornadoes that might have gone unseen.
City leaders question the cost and long-term affordability of the Rivana in the River District — a project with 220 units required to stay affordable for 40 years amid tax credit concerns.
Developers must close by the end of July and, if approved, finish in June 2028.
Daniel Cressy, 23, became the first patient in the Gulf South to be functionally cured of sickle cell disease through gene editing on Monday at Manning Family Children's in Metairie; he now plans to reapply for his pilot's medical certification and launch his nonprofit, Privileged Pilots, to help others.
Construction began this week on Raising Cane’s 9th Ward Stadium at LCMC Health Field next to Carver High, a 3,700-seat open-air facility that will host school sports and community events starting in fall; it is located (4300 Almonaster Boulevard) in the Desire Housing neighborhood.
