Good morning, New Orleans. Here's your local news at a glance for Sunday, the 29th of June.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 30-inch water main break near Upperline Street at 11 p.m. Friday dropped water pressure to below 20 psi — forcing a boil water advisory on several streets — and even though crews isolated the break by Saturday afternoon, restaurants like Cure and Vals had to change operations and lost a busy weekend shift.  NOLA.com

CRIME NEWS

  • Two people died and five others were injured in New Orleans after three shootings occurred within one hour — police discovered a double homicide in the Lower Ninth Ward, four people were hurt at a house party in New Orleans East, and a dispute in Algiers led to a shooting where the victim returned fire.  WWL-TV
  • A woman was found dead just after 5 p.m. Saturday in the front yard of a residence on the 2000 block of Marigny Street in St. Roch—police are investigating her death as a homicide.  NOLA.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New research from Tulane and Caltech shows that sections of New Orleans’ flood control system are sinking at up to 28 millimeters a year—nearly ten times faster than sea levels are rising. The study warns that continued subsidence may weaken the levees and calls for more monitoring and maintenance—authorities will review the findings to guide future repairs.  NOLA.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday the first mayoral campaign forum drew more than 150 people at VOTE headquarters in Gert Town — organizers had to turn away dozens of voters due to the crowd. The forum featured candidates Helena Moreno, Oliver Thomas, and Arthur Hunter who discussed key issues such as housing, infrastructure, and public safety in New Orleans.  WBOK
  • Congressman Troy Carter warned that a federal decision will cut off half of NOAA’s satellite data—used to track storm strengthening—raising concerns over hurricane forecasts for Louisiana during an already dangerous season.
