- ➤ Victor Séjour, born in New Orleans, wrote the short story 'Le Mulâtre' at age 20 and is recognized as the first African American fiction writer. He later moved to Paris—where he became a playwright focusing on themes of racial injustice and revenge—and continued writing until he died in 1874 from tuberculosis. Verite News
