ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • New Orleans police found the body of an unresponsive man near the 2000 block of Lakeshore Drive in Lake Pontchartrain on Thursday morning — the search area was where the Coast Guard had been looking for a missing boater after receiving a call just after 6 a.m. and another man was rescued by officers.  NOLA.com

  • T. Parker Host has announced its acquisition of Transmarine Navigation Corporation and said the move will bring more shipping business, cargo traffic and jobs to the New Orleans region — a step that will further strengthen the state's role in U.S. and global trade.  Biz New Orleans

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tomorrow, the Ashé Cultural Arts Center will lead a free procession to remember the trans-Atlantic slave trade, starting with an interfaith ceremony at Congo Square at 8 a.m. The group will march through Tremé with stops at historic sites like St. Augustine Catholic Church and the Tomb of the Unknown Slave before ending at the Canal Street Ferry terminal with a mural unveiling and river offering.  Verite News
  • The Global Black Economic Forum held a multi-day convening at ESSENCE Festival of Culture beginning July 3 to drive policy discussions on health, wealth, and work for Black communities worldwide. Today the forum features a fireside chat on health equity with Rev. Al Sharpton—along with award presentations such as the Cultural Catalyst Award for HEiTC—while events continue through July 6 in New Orleans.  Biz New Orleans

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Nunez Community College in Chalmette has launched its Cybersecurity program and will award 15 scholarships of $1,000 per semester to the first students enrolling for Fall 2025, funded by the Louisiana Board of Regents Cybersecurity Talent Initiative Fund—recipients must maintain a 2.0 GPA while taking at least 12 credit hours each semester, with classes starting Aug. 19 and applications closing on July 15.  Biz New Orleans

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • McDonnel Construction Services is suing the City of New Orleans because changes by the city’s architect increased costs and delayed work on the new jail wing, with a claim of over $4.4 million. The wing, which will have 89 beds for mentally ill detainees, is two-thirds complete and is expected to finish by June 2026 + Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson remains against the project.  WDSU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nurses at University Medical Center in New Orleans are preparing for their fourth strike amid ongoing contract talks and alleged retaliation by LCMC Health against union-supporting nurses. The two-day walkout is set for July 15—July 17 and aims to protest measures that led to recent disciplinary actions.  WWL-TV
