  • New Orleans mourned Walmart worker Edwin 'Buggy' Johnson Jr.—stabbed 40 times on June 18 near Chef Menteur Highway—as a second line on Monday honored his vibrant life while suspect Nicholas Ortega confessed to luring him into a fatal ambush with a stolen iPad.  NOLA.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Francis Ernest Dumas was a wealthy soldier who became the highest ranking Black combat officer during the Civil War + he freed more than 100 slaves, resigned his commission to protest the purge of Black officers, ran for lieutenant governor, and turned down an appointment as minister to Liberia before his death in 1901.  Verite News
  • On Saturday, July 5, New Orleans residents honored enslaved ancestors during the Ashé Cultural Arts Center’s 25th MAAFA Commemoration at Congo Square and marched through Tremé.
