  • Mandana Kashanian, a 64-year-old Iranian who entered legally in 1978 and was detained by ICE in her Lakeview home for overstaying her visa, was released Monday night—her family is on the way to Basille to pick her up—after being held in ICE custody pending removal.  WDSU
  • St. Gabriel police captain Devin Boutte was stabbed to death in his home Sunday morning after a troubled domestic relationship led 25-year-old suspect Warren Mitchell III to stab him multiple times—Mitchell now faces second-degree murder charges—while investigators probe drug ties and corruption links.  Louisiana Radio Network

CULTURE NEWS

  • On July 5, the Ashé Cultural Arts Center and local partners held the 25th MAAFA Commemoration to honor enslaved African ancestors with a procession that began at Congo Square, moved through Tremé, and ended at the Canal Street Ferry terminal where a new mural was unveiled—created by the RTA, Arts New Orleans, and GNO, Inc. More than 100 people marched during the two-hour event that featured speeches, prayers and music at key sites like Jackson Square and the Bienville Monument.  WWNO
  • Calvin Duncan released his autobiography The Jailhouse Lawyer with Sophie Cull this week—published by Penguin Random House—detailing his struggle with a broken justice system and his work teaching law classes in prison.   • Qualifying begins today for the October 11 election in New Orleans as four candidates—former judge Arthur Hunter, council president Helena Moreno, councilor Oliver Thomas, and state senator Royce Duplessis—file to run in the mayoral race because Mayor LaToya Cantrell is term limited.
