EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Orleans public schools released their 2025 LEAP test results this month with top performers in grades 3-8 including The Willow School at 88% mastery and Benjamin Franklin High School at 95% mastery. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Environmental groups Inclusive Louisiana and The Descendants Project filed a federal lawsuit on July 9 against Formosa Plastics—alleging it violated the 13th Amendment by blocking community access to an antebellum burial site of five enslaved individuals in St. James Parish—while the company plans a $9.4 billion industrial complex. The suit follows a February court order that granted one-day access—amid reports of harsh weather and restricted entry—that local residents say did not resolve ongoing concerns.  WWNO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eight candidates now qualify for the New Orleans mayor race after State Senator Royce Duplessis filed on Thursday morning and council members Helena Moreno and Oliver Thomas, Tyrell Morris, and former judge Arthur Hunter filed on Wednesday—political newcomers Renada Collins, Frank Robert Janusa and Richard Twiggs also joined the race.  WWL-TV
  • Marine Private First Class Harry LeBert, killed in June 1944 during World War II, was interred at Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery on July 2 after DNA testing confirmed his remains—an honor that gave his family long-awaited closure. Louisiana VA Secretary Charlton Meginley said many other service members still remain unidentified.  Louisiana Radio Network
  • The New Orleans City Council unanimously overrode Mayor LaToya Cantrell’s veto so that bond funds can go to Tulane University for Charity Hospital redevelopment following a settlement in the Wisner dispute. Council members said the change sped up the funding timeline for the project—ensuring the funds would be available this year despite the mayor’s concerns over resource allocation.  WDSU

HEALTH NEWS

  • Residents and businesses in parts of New Orleans East must boil water after utility work caused pressure to drop below 20 psi, and water quality tests will take up to 24 hours — officials say pressure has been restored.
