COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lifeguards at Stallings Gentilly Pool saved a swimmer who became unconscious over the weekend by diving in to perform CPR until he revived. Councilmembers honored the lifeguards at City Hall on Monday—showing their appreciation for the team’s quick action and training.  WWL-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Trader Joe’s will soon open its first New Orleans store on Tulane Avenue and plans to hire about 80 employees — following its successful locations in Baton Rouge and Metairie. A second store is planned on Freret Street at the former site of Our Lady of Lourdes School — and local business owners expect more customer traffic in the area.  WRNO

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Meta and Hyundai have asked for tax cuts to build a $10B AI data center in Richland and a $5.7B hydrogen steel mill in Ascension, which will create more than 10,000 jobs and add $139M in payroll. Entergy will spend over $3B on upgrades — these projects may lead to a $1.50 rise in monthly rates for some households.  New Orleans City Business

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fourteen candidates are vying for New Orleans Mayor and five are running for Orleans Parish Sheriff in the October ballot — the contests will prove competitive as voters decide on their future leadership. This upcoming election sets the stage for a wide-open mayoral race and a tough challenge for the sheriff.  WWL-TV
  • Major Louis D’Aquin’s Battalion of Free Men of Color fought for New Orleans after General Andrew Jackson promised each member 160 acres in exchange for help during the battle against the British—federal officials later dropped the promise to calm fears of destabilizing slavery, and the battalion disbanded.  Verite News
  • Sheriff Susan Hutson qualified Friday morning to seek another term amid criticism over her handling of a mass jailbreak, and her filing marks the final day for candidates to enter the mayor, City Council, and sheriff races in New Orleans + the primary is set for Oct. 11. Several local officials are also filing to join the race as community leaders seek to address ongoing security concerns.  NOLA.com
