  • The New Orleans Katrina Commemoration Foundation will host its first-ever formal Katrina Fundraising Gala tonight at 8 p.m. at Empire Orleans — 2222 Poydras Ave — where Wild Wayne and Margaret Orr will welcome guests in strictly enforced formal attire to support recovery and resilience efforts.  WDSU

  • Local group Bike Easy placed a ghost bike — in memory of 36-year-old Michael Milam who died two weeks ago in a hit-and-run — at the corner of St. Claude Avenue and Alvar Street and gathered with residents to demand safer roads along this busy corridor.  WWL-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Terrbonne Parish deputies arrested 49-year-old Brian Joseph Guillotte of Houma on felony charges for allegedly attacking two residents with a hammer at a Schriever home on July 22 at 9 p.m.—neighbors held him at gunpoint until officers arrived, with one victim in serious condition and the other treated and released.  WDSU
  • Law enforcement is asking 30-year-old Khalil Bryan—mistakenly released from the Orleans Justice Center more than 24 hours ago due to a mix-up with another inmate—to turn himself in as police continue searching for him amid a recent jail escape of ten inmates.  WDSU
  • On May 11, Jefferson Parish police said a man in an Elmwood parking lot was forced to drive his bank after 78-year-old Eugene Freeman from Houston and a second suspect took cash from his wallet; Freeman was arrested in Texas and is now held on aggravated kidnapping charges—he is out on a $500,000 bond.  NOLA.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • Prima’s 500 Club at 441 Bourbon St.—opened in September 1946 as a swanky venue—was managed by Leon Prima and hosted New Orleans native Louis Prima along with burlesque acts like Kalantan, Yvette Dare, and Lilly Christine. The club also became known as the place where Louis discovered saxophonist Sam Butera, who later joined his band.  WBOK

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Step Up for Action hosted a mayoral forum at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church in Broadmoor — ten of the 12 mayoral candidates answered voter questions about education, affordable housing and the local economy. Voters will cast ballots for mayor, Orleans Parish Sheriff and City Council seats on Oct. 11 — officials say the forum helped spark election engagement.  WWL-TV
