  • New Orleans will host a busy slate of community events this week as the Red Dress Run takes place on Aug. 9 at Armstrong Park for charity, Hexfest runs from Aug. 8–10 at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel, and NOLA Comic Con is scheduled for Aug. 9–10 in Kenner. Additional events include a Dirty Linen Night, a bonsai auction in Harahan, a community clothing and meal giveaway in Kenner, NOLA Pickle Fest, U.S. Gymnastics Championships and multiple cultural concerts, lectures and disaster preparedness workshops throughout mid-August.  NOLA.com

CRIME NEWS

  • A 39-year-old New Orleans man, Jake Alexander Grzelka, was booked on 380 counts of juvenile pornography after a joint investigation by the Attorney General’s office, the New Orleans Police Department and Homeland Security Investigations—law enforcement says the probe continues.  WWL-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Superdome, a landmark in downtown New Orleans, will turn 50 this Sunday as it marks decades of historic events from sports to concerts. ASM Global vice-president Doug Thornton said its design—twice the size of the Astrodome—has supported multiple renovations, including one completed last year ahead of Super Bowl LIX.  WWL-TV
  • Today, New Orleans hosts White Linen Night in the Arts District where Julia Street shines with over 20 gallery openings, live music, and local food vendors from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. COOLinary offers fixed-price meals through the month, Satchmo SummerFest honors Louis Armstrong at the New Orleans Jazz Museum today and tomorrow, and Mumford & Sons will perform at Champions Square tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.—all events aim to showcase the city’s creative spirit.  Fox 8

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • DOTD said the Harvey Tunnel is getting a major upgrade as the westbound side is expected to reopen within a month to relieve traffic and help local businesses. The $40 million project—installing over one million tiles and addressing roadway bumps, lights, and structure—will have the full tunnel open in the first quarter of 2026.  Fox 8
  • Louisiana made it illegal to handle your cell phone while driving and to drive below the speed limit in the left lane, effective August 1—drivers in school or work zones can be ticketed immediately and fines range from $150 to $350 with repeat offenses risking jail time. Officials say lawmakers passed these measures to help reduce accidents and road rage.  Louisiana Radio Network

  • Daniel Cressy, a 22-year-old aspiring pilot from Metairie, completed his gene therapy treatment for sickle cell disease at Manning Family Children's Hospital on July 30—he became the first patient in Louisiana to have his genes edited in a lab in Scotland to help cure his condition. His treatment, which followed repeated FAA medical rejections, aims to remove obstacles to his goal of a commercial pilot career.  Verite News
