  • Community groups held back-to-school events in New Orleans this past Saturday that offered a walk-a-thon at Morris F.X. Jeff Sr. Park in Algiers, giveaways at Morton Hall, and health screenings and school supplies at the H3C Apartments parking lot and Abundant Life Church—today, HOPE organization will host a Splash Day and giveaway at Behrman Gym in Algiers from noon to 3 p.m.  WWL-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Firefighters responded shortly before 1 a.m. to a house fire in the 3000 block of D’Aquin Street — the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office confirmed that an unresponsive adult male was found inside and later pronounced dead, with initial findings pointing to an accidental cause.  WWL-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Jefferson Parish grand jury indicted 18-year-old Cashmere Butler from Harvey on charges of second-degree murder for fatally shooting Samuel Tague during a robbery on the 5000 block of Fourth Street in Marrero on April 15 — he is now held at the Jefferson Parish Correctional Center with bail set at $750,000.  NOLA.com
  • Donnell Bluain, who is serving a life sentence in Georgia, was indicted on six counts of aggravated rape in 1986 cases in east Jefferson Parish where he allegedly broke into homes through windows—he will be arraigned on Aug. 18.  NOLA.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Louisiana Children’s Museum hosted MEOWseum Discovery Days yesterday and will continue the event today with family activities like scavenger hunts, garden planting, arts and crafts, dance parties & a meet-and-greet with Gabby at its City Park location. Event hours were 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 2 & will be 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today.  WDSU
  • This weekend, Satchmo SummerFest returns at the New Orleans Jazz Museum—marking 25 years of music and food for local fans.  WWL-TV
  • New Orleans Museum Month gives members free admission for two at over 29 museums in August—visitors can use an active membership at places like the National WWII Museum, Ogden Museum of Southern Art and Louisiana Children's Museum—and some special exhibits may require extra fees.  WWL-TV
