BUSINESS NEWS

  • Caroline Rogers and Mike Bertel are turning an old auto repair shop in Mid-City into Farmer’s, a year-round market where local farmers will sell fresh produce, meat, seafood, dairy and other local products on a consignment basis. They plan to open by Thanksgiving and will work with the nearby Thursday farmers market to complement the local food system — boosting access for buyers and supporting local producers.  NOLA.com

CRIME NEWS

  • A 14-year-old boy named Jacarin Scott and a 34-year-old man named Elbert E. Recasner were killed in two shootings in St. Roch on July 31; police responded to the first incident on North Miro Street around 4:14 p.m. and to a second on Franklin Avenue less than 10 minutes later—investigators are still working on the case.  WDSU
  • Benjamin Beale's trial is delayed as he faces charges for the 2022 death of Julia Dardar after police discovered her remains in his Lower Ninth Ward home—body parts were stored in a freezer.  WWL-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Saenger Theatre chief David Skinner will celebrate the venue’s 100th anniversary in 2027 with a yearlong lineup of Broadway shows, concerts, and private events (reinforcing its role as a key economic engine on Canal Street). The centenary celebration will build on the theater’s history of drawing local crowds (and will honor its storied revival after past challenges) for New Orleans.  WBOK

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Coach Danielle Allen begins her 26th season at McDonogh 35 High School—teaching life lessons that build success on and off the field. She reunited her teams after Katrina and now former players give back to the school—evidence of her lasting local impact.  WDSU
  • New Orleans charter schools are expanding specialized programs in STEM, arts, language, and military leadership—schools like NOMMA, RSNO, and New Orleans Charter Science & Mathematics High School have introduced early college credit options, community projects, and clean energy initiatives. The Education Guide also reports that several schools will open new campuses and name new leaders this year to boost innovative learning opportunities.  New Orleans City Business

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Jeff Landry declared a state emergency on July 25 to speed up repairs on Camp J at Angola—which closed in 2017 due to security issues—and to reopen the facility for housing violent offenders amid capacity concerns. The emergency order will remain in effect through Aug. 23.  New Orleans City Business
  • The city of New Orleans launched an affordable parking program for hospitality workers after applications opened on August 4, offering over 1,000 discounted spots in lots and garages across the French Quarter, Marigny, and the CBD to ease high living costs. An outreach event is scheduled for August 7 from 1:30 to 4 p.m. in the French Quarter + the program is a partnership with LAZ Parking, Premium Parking, and others.  WDSU
