  • Rebuilding Together New Orleans is partnering with Entergy to lead a week of service events next week that will repair and weatherize homes to mark the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina—organizers say volunteers will work in every council district to support low-income residents, older adults, and veterans whose homes still show storm damage.  WDSU

  • A vehicle crash on the Crescent City Connection Bridge occurred yesterday at about 6:00 a.m. causing heavy delays for Westbank commuters, and officials urge drivers to exit at St. Charles Avenue+ take the Huey P Long Bridge as an alternate route.  WWL-TV

  • On Day 9 of the search for missing 12-year-old Bryan Vasquez from his New Orleans East home, officials continue looking for him and Crimestoppers is offering a $1250 reward (call 504 822 1111) for any useful information.  WWL-TV
  • Mayor LaToya Cantrell was indicted last Friday on 11 counts including wire fraud, obstruction of justice, and lying to a grand jury—allegedly misusing city funds to travel with former police officer Jeffrey Vappie—and is set for an initial arraignment on Sept. 10 which could force her removal from office if she is convicted of a felony.  Verite News

  • More than 1,500 housing and community leaders will gather in New Orleans from August 25 to 29 for the NeighborWorks Training Institute, which will inject an estimated $4.2M into the local economy and offer workshops on building generational wealth and fixing tangled property titles—key steps for affordable housing support.  New Orleans City Business

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Ben Franklin High School in New Orleans was ranked the best in Louisiana and placed among the top 100 nationwide, scoring 99.45 on a 100-point scale according to U.S. News and World Report—making it the only Louisiana school on the list. The selective school, which requires an entrance exam and a minimum GPA, saw 91% of its students take AP tests, showing strong academic performance.  NOLA.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An agreement signed Friday by state and federal officials sets up a plan to restore 57 miles of wetlands along the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet—often called a hurricane highway—across Orleans and St. Bernard parishes ahead of Hurricane Katrina’s 20th anniversary. Congress must still approve funds before work can begin to protect these vulnerable shorelines.  WBOK

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tulane engineers are testing a portable device that uses acoustic tweezing— a method that levitates a drop of blood— to detect dangerous clotting in trauma patients in under 20 minutes. The device received a $4.3 million grant from the Department of Defense and will be studied in field hospitals and emergency rooms.  New Orleans City Business
