ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, August 23, firefighters battled a three-alarm fire at a salvage yard on Old Gentilly Road in New Orleans East—delays from heavy rain, poor streets, and inoperable hydrants complicated the response until 62 personnel and 24 units controlled the blaze without injuries.  WWL-TV

  • Police continue to search for 12-year-old Bryan Vasquez, who left his home on Thursday morning at 5 a.m. when he climbed out of his bedroom window—he is nonverbal, was last seen in the Michoud area wearing an adult diaper, and Crimestoppers offers a $1,250 reward for tips leading to his safe return.  WWL-TV
  • A man died after early morning gunfire on Iberville Street in the French Quarter when two men argued near Chartres—one pulled out his gun and fired multiple shots before fleeing.  WWL-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A cold front moved into southeast Louisiana late Sunday and is now lowering temperatures from the upper 90s to near 90—making it more comfortable for New Orleans residents. The drier air will last through the work week while a few showers may appear near the coast.  WDSU

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Legal scholars say the U.S. Supreme Court may rule on Louisiana v. Callais to remove Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which may cut minority representation in Louisiana—House Speaker DeVillier told lawmakers to be ready to redraw districts between Oct. 23 and Nov. 13 if needed.  WBOK
  • New Orleans mayoral candidates Moreno, Thomas and Duplessis—vowing to boost public trust—plan to reform the troubled Sewerage and Water Board by proposing governance changes, improved oversight and a new stormwater fee while new executive Randy Hayman works to finish key projects like water meter replacement and a power complex by year’s end.  NOLA.com
