COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wifey’s, a new queer bar in the Marigny, opened Aug. 28 after owner Bobby Cohen bought Iggy’s assets that many neighbors said brought danger from fights, shootings, and drugs — neighbors gathered on Sept. 4 to welcome a safer, more friendly place, and Cohen said he will work with the community to keep it inclusive.  NOLA.com

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Friday night, a fire broke out at an unoccupied home on Painters St. in Gentilly around 8:00 p.m. and quickly spread to nearby houses and vehicles, with NOFD reporting that 17 units and 46 personnel had controlled the blaze by 9:18 p.m.—no one was hurt.  WWL-TV
  • A home in Gentilly was destroyed in a two-alarm fire on Sept 6 — damaging nearby houses and vehicles — as 46 firefighters responded after a 7:59 p.m. dispatch with no injuries reported and the cause under investigation.  WDSU
  • A two-alarm fire burned a vacant Milneburg home Friday night on Painters Street, damaging nearby houses and cars while 47 firefighters battled the blaze—no injuries were reported and the cause remains under investigation.  NOLA.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • STEM NOLA is hosting a hands-on event where K-12 students will build and test levees to learn about flood protection—participants will use materials like clay, sand, and straw to understand natural hazards. The program takes place on Sept. 13 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Cut-Off Recreation Center in Algiers, and registration is required.  WDSU

  • New Orleans launched its Crescent City ID program Saturday to give residents access to city services like the public library and NORD facilities. State officials said the card does not replace DMV IDs—raising concerns it may hide a person’s true identity.  WWL-TV
  • New Orleans state Sen. Royce Duplessis released his first TV ad on Sept. 6 that sharply attacked City Council Vice President Helena Moreno — blaming her for chaos at City Hall ahead of early voting less than a month away. He said he will run more ads and tour all 17 wards to build support for his mayoral bid.  WBOK

HEALTH NEWS

  • Abundant Life Tabernacle hosted a Men’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Event on Sept. 6 at 1701 Franklin Ave. in New Orleans—offering free prostate checks, blood pressure tests, and other health screenings while a health panel and second line contest gave out prizes such as flat-screen TVs and Saints tickets.  WDSU

  • State champions Edna Karr defeated Shaw 35-0 in their season opener on the Westbank—Chalmette shut out John Ehret 35-0, Warren Easton won 48-7, Mandeville edged Salmen 38-25, and Lakeshore crushed Fontainebleau 45-7, setting the stage for a competitive high school football season.  WWL-TV
