  • New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell appeared in federal court on Wednesday, Sept. 10 to plead not guilty to 11 corruption charges including wire fraud and conspiracy to obstruct justice — she will remain free on bond with travel restrictions pending trial.  NOLA.com
  • Mayor LaToya Cantrell pleaded not guilty to federal charges including conspiracy, wire fraud, and false statements in court on September 10, and she is set to return on Nov 17 at 9 a.m.—the allegations accuse her of covering up an alleged relationship with former security guard Jeffrey Vappie and misusing city funds.  WDSU

EDUCATION NEWS

  • KID smART broke ground on its new Center for Arts and Education at 2533 Columbus St. in New Orleans on Sept. 10th—this facility will feature studios for visual arts, dance, performing arts and podcasting and is designed to boost its annual impact by over 250% before its spring 2026 opening.   • Louisiana summers have grown hotter and more dangerous as higher temperatures, increased humidity, and longer heat waves led to a record 86 heat-related deaths in 2023.
