CULTURE NEWS

  • The Historic New Orleans Collection renovated the former K-Paul’s at 416 Chartres into a modern $6M exhibit hub for fabrication, digital media and offices—preserving historic details while adding fresh, bright spaces for its team.  New Orleans City Business

EDUCATION NEWS

  • unCommon Construction, a nonprofit that trains high school students in construction work, will mark its 11th anniversary on Sept. 20 at its new campus at 1120 Freret Street with a VIP party at 5:00 p.m., live music by celebrity DJ El Camino, and a speaking program at 7:00 p.m. The event, which is expected to draw around 200 guests, will show the group’s move to expand youth training and community workshops.  Biz New Orleans

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New Orleans voters will decide on the Fair Chance Amendment, which would amend the city charter to shield people with conviction histories from job and housing discrimination—building on the expanded Ban the Box ordinance from 2018. Supporters say the measure will set a legal foundation for protecting formerly incarcerated neighbors from unfair treatment.  New Orleans City Business
  • Flood insurance premiums in unincorporated Jefferson Parish will drop 35% starting Oct. 1 due to an upgrade from Class 5 to Class 3 in the National Flood Insurance Program's Community Rating System+ parish officials say the new rating, the first in Louisiana, will help save families and businesses millions.  WWL-TV
  • New Orleans mayoral candidates debated how to address the city's population decline with proposals that include affordable housing, job creation, and improved quality of life—plans that aim to reverse the trend for the future.  WWL-TV
  • Former City Council member Kristin Gisleson Palmer has been named executive director of the Preservation Resource Center—an organization that preserves historic New Orleans neighborhoods—and will start on Sept 29. She brings decades of restoration experience and council leadership to manage the nonprofit's $2 million budget and 15 employees.  NOLA.com
  • Attorney General Liz Murrill urged former House Speaker Clay Schexnayder to return a large cypress board that vanished 18 months ago from his Gonzales office—once displayed at the Capitol when it was donated in 1955. The board remains unclaimed by any state agency and is still being sought by family members.  WBOK

HEALTH NEWS

  • Another Louisiana resident died from a vibrio vulnificus infection—marking the fifth death in 2025 as cases increased during warmer months when the bacteria spread through wounds or raw seafood; high-risk patients faced severe complications.  New Orleans City Business
  • Experts said Chagas disease — spread by kissing bugs that bite while people sleep — is now a permanent health concern in the US. The CDC estimated 280,000 people were infected and doctors in Louisiana and other states urged stronger surveillance and prevention measures to reduce serious complications.  WDSU

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Uptown residents say new housing rules near Tulane have led to more 'for rent' signs showing empty homes in the University area — many students now live on campus as a result. Realtors and longtime neighbors worry investors may change plans if fewer tenants are found.  Fox 8

  • LSU safety Dashawn Spears was named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded two interceptions in the Tigers' win over Florida. The team is 3-0 and will host Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday.  WRNO
  • The chances for New Orleans to host the 2031 Super Bowl are at risk after the city and state missed the NFL deadline because the official bid was delayed by an unfinished lease for the Caesars Superdome. Negotiations continue (with Saints owner Gayle Benson playing a key role) to extend the lease through 2055 and keep the bid alive.  Fox 8
