ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Tuesday, July 29, 2025, a contractor cut down 107 trees planted by Healthy Community Services on Sewerage and Water Board property in the 7th Ward—raising concerns that the loss of shade worsens the urban heat island effect. A Sewerage and Water Board spokesperson said the agency regrets the removal and is working to replace the trees.  NOLA.com

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana earned a Top 10 ranking from Area Development for doing business for the first time in five years — its rank of 9 reflects reforms such as the LED FastStart program, Project Lightning Speed, and a $150 million investment fund designed to boost business growth. State officials say the state will work to maintain its gains as efforts continue to attract high-stakes investments.  Biz New Orleans
  • Four mayoral candidates faced off in a FOX 8 debate on vision and leadership, with each candidate outlining plans to tackle city issues. FOX 8 political analyst Mike Sherman offered insight into the debates—helping voters compare key policy proposals before the election.  Fox 8
  • State leaders challenged major pharmacy benefit managers during a legislative fight; although the ban on vertical integration failed, the state re-awarded most of the PBM contract for 2026 to local Liviniti—splitting services with CVS's SilverScript. Lawmakers also filed three lawsuits against CVS for alleged unfair trade practices as experts debate the impact on rising drug prices.  NOLA.com
  • New Orleans sued the state in the 19th Judicial District Court on Sept. 4 to challenge Louisiana’s school zone camera laws—claiming that state rules overstep local authority and require the city to return about $1.4 million in speeding fines. The lawsuit also argues that the state must prove the laws are necessary while differing school zone markings risk federal funding and leave revenue-sharing issues unresolved.  NOLA.com
  • Orleans District Attorney Jason Williams said he is urging lawmakers to change the old rule that lets defendants choose judge trials with a written motion — a move he believes will create fairness across courts. Critics worry the change will limit defendants’ rights while supporters argue it gives victims a stronger voice.  NOLA.com
  • The New Orleans City Council will discuss expanding missing person alerts using the NOLA Ready system today as officials plan to vote on the proposal.  WWL-TV
  • The New Orleans City Council approved a request for the legislative auditor to review city finances amid a $100 million deficit—Councilmembers Moreno and Giarrusso drafted the request and the vote passed six to zero, with Councilmember Thomas absent.
