COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A wide range of community events are set to take place in New Orleans this October and November—highlighting the arts season kickoff on Magazine Street on Oct.4, a Salon de Jeanne d’Arc conference at East Bank Regional Library, and the Pharmacy Museum’s Fall Oddities Emporium on Oct.5. Additional events include a St. Bernard bike ride on Oct.25, a haunted attraction in Jefferson through Nov.8, and various concerts, book signings and fundraisers for local residents.  NOLA.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Langenstein’s, New Orleans’ oldest family-run grocer, will sell four stores to Robért Fresh Market and offer its staff new roles—while the familiar brand phases out by mid-October.  New Orleans City Business
  • French Quarter shops are seeing lower sales as work on Decatur and St. Peter — part of a project to update aging infrastructure — makes it hard for locals and tourists to reach them. City officials say the five-month work will finish by late February while efforts to improve safety continue.  WDSU

CRIME NEWS

  • In 1895, white union dockworkers attacked six Black nonunion workers in a violent event that ended racial solidarity at New Orleans docks—state militia later restored order amid lingering tensions.  Verite News
  • A New Orleans jury convicted former 911 director Tyrell Morris on all counts after a May 2023 car crash in a city-owned vehicle that saw him using flashing lights to impersonate a police officer and altering rules—judge Simone Levine ordered him to remain in jail until sentencing on October 1.  WWL-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local food writer Ian McNulty returned from Spain and Portugal with renewed love for New Orleans dining—he urged locals to revisit cherished restaurants and savor authentic Louisiana cuisine.  WWNO
  • Local fall festivals will bring music, food, and fun to the area starting with Gretna Fest on Oct. 3-5 at 740 Second St.—it will feature live bands and tasty treats. Other events, including the National Fried Chicken Festival and NOLA Coffee Festival, will offer art, rides, and family activities throughout October and November.  NOLA.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of New Orleans theater department will open its season with a hip-hop version of Shakespeare’s 'As You Like It' at the Nims Theatre at 2000 Lakeshore Drive through Oct. 4. Nunez Community College will host a history lecture by William de Marigny Hyland on Oct. 1 at 3710 Paris Road and offer ServSafe One-Day Manager Training on Oct. 6 led by Chef Ruth Varisco from 9 a.m.—with an online exam starting at 3 p.m. and a fee of $180.  NOLA.com

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Three years after residents of Isle de Jean Charles were relocated due to rising seas, many now report that their new homes in Gray have serious issues such as leaking doors and broken appliances — forcing them to pay for repairs while their hopes for a safe haven fade. Government officials say the move, fully funded by federal money, has become a cautionary example of climate relocation efforts amid Louisiana’s worsening coastal erosion.  Verite News
  • Groundwork New Orleans and Healthy Community Services will open the Vision 2 Reality Stormwater Management Park at 1541 N. Claiborne on Sept 30 at 10:00 a.m., turning a flood-prone area into a green space that soaks up stormwater and cools the neighborhood. The project—built with over $400,000 in grants and featuring solar power, a 200-foot bioswale, and 65 new trees—will help reduce flooding and boost local green jobs.  Biz New Orleans

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Early voting starts today in the New Orleans mayoral election as voters head to the polls; Professor Ed Chervenak reports that Council President Helena Moreno leads while candidates Royce Duplessis and Oliver Thomas trail—voting ends October 4th with the election set for October 11th and a possible runoff on November 15th if no candidate wins a majority.  Louisiana Radio Network
  • Casius Pealer is challenging longtime assessor Erroll Williams in the upcoming Orleans Parish election—he says fair and clear property assessments are key to easing housing costs. Pealer’s campaign, backed by affordable housing advocates, plans to bring transparency to how taxes are set and collected.  Verite News
  • A New Orleans panel on the Housing Trust Fund recommended that most of the $12.5 million be used for small multifamily affordable projects that can move forward quickly with new zoning rules — the panel presented its report on Sept. 26 and now the City Council will review the plan.  Verite News
