  • Amy Dudgeon from the New Neighbor Project said immigrant families in New Orleans are scared to leave their homes—enrollment in Spanish-language English classes has dropped. She said many children are missing school—local schools and her organization are now working to add online classes and other support to help these families.  NOLA.com

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport rose to 10th in the J.D. Power rankings after its acclaimed North Terminal design and local food choices like Café du Monde and Emeril’s Table impressed travelers, and officials are consulting on a master plan — which will add gates, a parking garage and expanded facilities by 2031 if growth continues.  NOLA.com
  • Businesses across south Louisiana announced multiple hires and promotions—Delta Financial Advisors hired Cappy Johnson as senior portfolio manager while Loyola University New Orleans’ College of Music and Media named Shaniece Bickham as director of Communication and Design and Laura Jayne as assistant dean; Baton Rouge firms including Assurance Financial, Build Baton Rouge, Bank of Zachary and Sales and Marketing Executives of Greater Baton Rouge also made key appointments.  NOLA.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • St. Roch Market turned 150 today in New Orleans and hosted a festival that celebrated its role as a start for many local chefs’ careers—chefs said the historic food hall sparked culinary journeys.  WWL-TV
  • New archbishop James Checchio, 59, from New Jersey was introduced in New Orleans on September 24—he walked through local churches, met community members, and began his public duties after a day filled with visits at St. Rita, Notre Dame Seminary, and St. Augustine High School. He will assume full duties as coadjutor archbishop in mid-November to address ongoing challenges, including the church’s legacy of clergy abuse and aging parishes.  NOLA.com

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of New Orleans will hold the 2025 Homer L. Hitt Distinguished Alumni Gala—powered by Entergy—at The National WWII Museum: Boeing Freedom Pavilion on November 6. The event will honor alumni from its academic colleges and Privateer Athletics and recognize leaders like Entergy Executive Kimberley Cook-Nelson, Chef Edgar 'Dook' Chase IV, CFO Daniel Crumb, Engineer Henry Singer, artist Peter Halley, President John Reuther and Privateer Athletics honoree Wayne Harer.  University of New Orleans

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Sabine River Authority of Louisiana hired a firm to study if selling 200,000 to 800,000 acre-feet of water per year to a Dallas firm—raising worries among local residents and business owners—might lower Toledo Bend's water levels and harm local docks and fishing. The study will run through the end of this year, and no decision on water sales will be made until 2026.  NOLA.com
  • Early voting is underway in Louisiana ahead of the Oct. 11 elections. Polls are open from 8:30 a.m.—6 p.m. through Oct. 4 and absentee requests are due by Oct. 7.  WWL-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Cure by Design gala in New Orleans honored cancer advocates and raised funds for patient housing—supporting future care for those affected by cancer.  Fox 8
  • A new nationwide study from Yale and Northeastern shows Louisiana ranked 49th on health and environmental measures as hospitals remain at risk from natural hazards—10.5% of inpatient beds are in high-hazard flood zones. Although the state earned a higher rank for air quality, experts say policy changes will boost facility resilience.  NOLA.com

  • The No.3 LSU Tigers lost their first season game to the No.13 Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford Saturday afternoon by a score of 24 to 19 as key plays like an interception and two field goals shifted momentum in a hard-fought match.  WDSU
