BUSINESS NEWS

  • New Orleans’ International Coffee Corp.—a family firm in Metairie—faces very high coffee prices and 50% tariffs from Brazil that make trading hard in a shaky market. The company will use its long experience to guide clients as a Supreme Court decision on the tariffs is heard next month.  NOLA.com

CULTURE NEWS

  • At Fried Chicken Fest, Brennan’s team is honoring a slain chef by featuring a special sandwich made in his memory—showing respect for his legacy and local flavor. The commemorative dish will be available for festival-goers this weekend.  Fox 8
  • Mike Perlstein, a longtime WWL-TV reporter, retired after 15 years on air, leaving behind a legacy in investigative journalism—he broke major stories on local issues such as the NOPD Call Waiting report and helped overturn wrongful convictions.   • FOX 8’s Sabrina Wilson was honored today with a legacy award from the New Orleans Association of Black Journalists for her long career and strong impact on local journalism—she has helped shape our news in the community. The honor marks a clear recognition of her work as a media leader.  Fox 8

EDUCATION NEWS

  • University of New Orleans may change its name to LSU New Orleans as the school prepares to rejoin the LSU system, with interim president Matt Lee outlining the proposal during a recent board meeting. UNO president Kathy Johnson said a transition team will develop a plan by July while students expressed mixed views about losing the school’s unique identity and potential tuition hikes.  NOLA.com
  • OpenWaters Louisiana and NORD said they will launch a new indoor program for beginner swimming and water safety—offering free lessons and showing maritime job paths—on October 7th. NORD CEO Larry Barabino Jr. and Port NOLA Commissioner Jeanne Ferrer said the program will help young people gain essential water skills and learn about maritime careers.  WDSU

  • In the Orleans Parish sheriff’s race, Michelle Woodfork dominated fundraising in September by raising over $43,000 in three weeks—more than twice what Susan Hutson gathered and nearly four times what Edwin Shorty received. Woodfork’s campaign has raised over $367,000, spent more than $129,000 on advertising, and holds $86,000 on hand as the race heads toward the Oct. 11 election.  NOLA.com
  • Attorney General Liz Murrill canceled all of Secretary of State Nancy Landry’s outside legal contracts—canceling key agreements with major firms—to protect her authority in the redistricting dispute ahead of the Oct. 15 Supreme Court hearing.  NOLA.com

SPORTS NEWS

  • The New Orleans Saints activated quarterback Taysom Hill and tight end Foster Moreau ahead of today's game at Caesars Superdome against the New York Giants—both players are returning after recent injuries. The team also added linebacker Eku Leota while placing wide receiver Trey Palmer on injured reserve and ruling out defensive tackle John Ridgeway III.  WWL-TV
  • Ava Barduca, a senior for Slidell, led her team with powerful plays during a match against Country Day—she scored many kills and blocked crucial balls while calming the chaos on the court. Coach Danny Tullis said her strong play and quick thinking helped set the stage for the team as they push to defend their state championship.  NOLA.com
  • The New Orleans Saints activated quarterback Taysom Hill and tight end Foster Moreau from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list and both will play today against the New York Giants. Hill had a season-ending knee injury in December and Moreau missed the first four games due to a serious knee injury—both returned to practice this week.  WDSU
